ENGLISH CLUBS IN EUROPE
Apart from the miseries of under-performing in major tournaments and the ‘Brexit’, England has other things to worry about in domestic football evolution at European level.Chelsea was the last English team that conquered the Europeback in 2012. After that English clubs were atrocious on European stage. Theyoften get slammed bycritics for not playing up to their standards, no matter how prestigious the premier league maybebut the English clubs find it really hard against Spanish and German oppositions. The record of English clubs is awful in Champions league after Chelsea’s triumph in 2012. Talking about 2012-13 season Man Utd and Arsenal were knocked out by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively inthe round of 16. After that in 2013-14season Bayern Munichfirst knocked out Arsenal in round of 16then Man Utd in quarters. Chelsea managed to reach thesemi finals only to getbeaten by another Spanish side Atletico Madrid. In 2014-15 season the English teams couldn’t get past round of 16. Liverpool finished third in their group, and Arsenal, Chelsea and Man city were knocked out in round of 16. And last seasonMan city was again beaten by a Spanish side Real Madrid in semis. Moreover, in 2013 it was all German Final and in 2014 and 2016 we had all Spanish final. And if we narrow down the European cup winnersand runners up by nation, then England lags behind Spain and Italy. This shows how well they’ve emerged and evolved.Looking at these facts, it’s clear that English clubs lack the cutting edge against Spanish and German clubs.Over all these years I’ve heard the debates and arguments of Liga fans and premier league fans over the best league in world. I’ve seen comments from English fans that Liga is a race of 3-4 horses while premier league have 6-7 contenders sometimes.Arguably premier league maybe the best league in terms of money, domestic competition and entertainment, but when it comes to tactical battles, technique and style of play they lag behind the other major European leagues (Especially LaLiga). It is said that ‘time heals everything’, so now time might’ve come for the English clubs to shine again. With several what is considered to be the best managers of the game today have headed towards the Premier league. It may be a beginning ofa new era.Pep Guardiola the pioneer of tiki-taka style, Jose Mourinho the genius of counter attacking football and Antonio Conte the tactical master. All these managers have all sorts of resources and immense fan support at their respective clubs. Fans and pundits are already optimistic about the new season. So we canexpect that finally the Englishmen might m
ake some much needed influence on European turf.
